The Orient is described in many ways, and in many different fashions. These fashions can consist of many false accusation, misinterpretations, and many more stereotypes in this culture. More than not, the oppression of women has been a big factor when describing the Orient in the book The Arabian Nights. There are many tiny stories throughout this book that can describe and show how they are mistaken for this writing.
The oppression of women in this book is brought out all throughout this book. However, it mostly stands out in the beginning of the book there is many stereotypes of people being violent to women sexually, verbally, and physically. This can draw a lot of attention to how these writings are problematic. This short story goes into depth and great detail to show how women are described. The story is all about the king. The king was tricked into sleeping with the demons wife who tricked him because she has wanted to sleep with a total of 100 men. The king was very distraught by this and promised to never sleep with a girl who was not a virgin again. The king would get a new girl each time and after he was done with her he would put them to death. Then the viziers daughter volunteered to be the next girl. She has told him all these stories to be remain alive and to save the rest of the girls from being a next one in line.
I choose this story because it reveals from the writing all the women oppression in the book. This passage shows the sexual, physically, and verbal abuse that these women take. Putting it all together in the stories. In this passage it shows how they perceive the women in the orient. The king is allowed to do whatever he wants with these women. They have no control over how they are treated. He is also using them for sex and the fathers have to give their daughters away knowing what will happen to them in the future. These fathers cannot do anything about it because he is the king and rules their civilization. These women have no control is they want to have sex with him. they are forced into the role and chosen. The king is basically forcing them to do as he says. When the king is done with them, he basically verbally abuses them because he believe when a women is not pure that they are of no value and says that they must be put to death. Next, he has them put to death. He is just capable of saying put them to death. These women have no control over it and our losing their lives. He does this all the time too so there are many women losing their lives day after day.
The passage shows all types of abuse and oppression that these women face everyday in this world. They cannot do anything about it. This is how The Orient is presented the women are pressed like this everyday. I believe that their way of how women are presented in society causes the experts to think this way. Even though that is not how it is. Just because it is different than how our society lives that is how they perceive it.
