Staninger brings up some interesting points from the movie Aladdin. She first describes how Jasmine is much different from the other Disney princesses such as Belle From Beauty and the Beast, and Ariel From The Little Mermaid. She knows what she wants, she cannot be bossed around. This is greatly described as the new American teenager. This movie went through the roof in popularity because Jasmine showed a lot of good traits for modern feminism. This raised a lot of questions about the women in Arab culture. Jasmine is portrayed as an american teenager, her clothes, and the way she conducts herself is not of the Arab culture and raised some questions. The Americanization of Aladdin has caused many stereotypes to be brought out. The main characters are people who have the most white characteristics. While the other characters the stereotypes of the Arab Culture are brought out. Jasmine’s clothes are a very good example of this. Her clothes would never be something a woman of that culture would wear. Also, Aladdin himself was based off of Tom Cruise. The bad guys in the movie displayed some more stereotypes with big noses and the eyebrows basically vertical. The movie displayed Jasmine as a typical American teenager and perhaps Disney did not care to show characteristics of Middle Eastern women. However, if they did not care about displaying the characteristics of Middle Eastern people with Jasmine and Aladdin then why did they show stereotypes with the bad characters. In thinking of that, the Disney writers show evidence on how Jasmine’s actions truly can show values and characteristics of Middle Eastern women throughout history.
Jasmine was described as an American teenager. This brought many stereotypes into action in this movie. Jasmine can still show traits of Arab culture.
Reflection: I think that summarizing was a lot easier than paraphrasing. This you can read the text and describe what you just read. You do not have to turn words into new ones with different meanings but ultimately mean the same thing. For summarizing you need to get the main points down. Then you can elaborate on those main points. Paraphrasing is kind of like giving a different meaning but means the same thing. I think summarizing is a lot easier. It involves a lot less thinking and you can just put down the main points from what you just read. Paraphrasing is like solving a puzzle and can be bard to put together sometimes.
